Not to detract traffic from an already limited and narrow field of interest, I invite anyone to stop by and say hello or just to take a look around. I'm very interested in anyone who is in the process of: planning to, building, or living in their own modern castle; and I'd like to "interview" anybody who has made any level of progress toward this goal in order to post and share this information with everyone. Feel free to visit the site: http://dreamsofcastles.blogspot.com/ Paul [This message has been edited by Paul (edited 07-08-2007).] I'm sure there are several castles in Europe that are owned privately that one could find some version of billiards located within, so I think you're likely incorrect on that opinion. As to "real" castles, that's well and true... Yet you post a negative comment in a section of a forum that has to do with "building and renovation your own castle"... Why bother? Do you simply enjoy quashing other's imagination, or just correcting them to follow your more rigid sense of definition? Allow the rest of us with a sense of imagination to dream of, discuss, and/or build a residence in the style of a castle. If you it drives you that mad, just petition the admins to have the forum titles and rules changed to suit your grammatical and historical sensibilities. I'm somewhat surprised that an admin of the BB that features a forum title dealing with the building a castle would so dislike a post regarding the matter. Maybe I am incorrect on the intent of the forum and it is meant for discussions on how to build "castles" out of cardboard boxes or sugar cubes. If so, my mistake... [This message has been edited by castlemeup (edited 07-08-2007).] I don't think Paul is being negative. Everyone has their own interpretation or definition of a castle, and we here are regularly being asked to define exactly what a castle is. I collect information on British castles, and if I included every single building within Britain that had been named a "Castle", then my house would be sinking. In my opinion, true castles were built for a dual purpose - defence and domestic living. Not JUST defence and not JUST domestic living. There are many castellated houses - the castellations being solely for decoration. Anybody who chooses to build a "new" castle can surely only consider it will have a domestic purpose. Your proposed building may LOOK like a castle, but I suspect it will not be built for defence. That is what Paul is trying to say, I think. Anyone can call their home a "castle", and certainly ruined castles (or tower-houses) can be restored to become homes again. They would still come under my definition of a castle, because at some time during their life, they have been used for defence AND domestic living. To commence building a structure that may end up looking like a castle (but what does a castle look like - there are so many varied designs) is a noble idea and a mammoth task. Most people's idea of a castle is something old, and a new structure cannot be that. It may have the looks, but lacks the history. To try and restore an old castle is something completely different. Good luck with whatever you choose to do. AJR: You definition is ok for me, but I would like to add two other very important purposes of medieval castle-building: Representation (meaning social status) and Control (meaning the castles beeing a centre of a political, social and economic system). It would be unfortunate and exceedingly unlikely to ever need to use a modern castle in the in the same defense role as those of old, so for the purposes of the English language, I'm afraid "castle" will be the term of choice for a domestic home built in the style of a castle. I do appreciate your definition though, it is simple and accurate. I agree that the use of the word "castle" is applied a little too liberally to many structures in America and aborad. Frankly, a lot of them look very little like a castle (a few crenellations do not a castle make), though if you visited (if you haven't already) castlemagic.com you'd find a pretty fair representation of a castle that is about as close as to a "real" castle as one could realistically use or want in modern times. Thanks for the replies. I'm glad to see this board and section isn't dead, despite the very limited pool of potential viewers. Roger builds castles using two stone walls with insulation and reinforced concrete between the stone walls. I have been scouring the web looking for modern castlebuilders and owners in order to find information for a site/blog dealing specifically with collecting and presenting information to would-be or current castle builders, as well as starting a castle building discussion group online for the same purpose. Your site came up in one of my searches. Paul I'm sorry to inform you that proper castle building in Europe ended at around the 15th century.
There are no castles at all in America.
True castles don't have pool tables!
Although, the USA has invented a modern form of the castle.
Its called the gated community.
Although, I suppose that this could be closer to the idea of the Iron age hill fort.castlemeup Well, a fine "how do you do"... Paul We are here to assist people like you. AJR Castlemeup, welcome.
AndrewMerlin And there it is again: Our never ending discussion about the definition of a castle. Is so much easier in german language, because we have the two terms "Burg" and "Schloss". The Later meaning what you would like to build, but has nothing to do with a medieval castle. castlemeup Thank you very much for the replies. I fully understand the historical necessity and purposes of a castle, as well as the purpose of a modern "castle". The Highlander Roger Greim of CastleMagic has been building castles since 1980. He resides in Kataryna Castle which he built in Sandpoint, ID. motherspider Kataryna Castle is beautiful and the build process that he showed was amazing.

MotherSpider.comsabahat Those who want more information should probably elaborate and frame actual hard questions, or they will just get snide comments. Some good questions would be to ask about building your own castle vs hiring someone to build it, ask who has done it, etc. Be specific or you won't get answers.
